The burbot is a curious fish, as it’s most active in winter. It spawns in January–February, and researchers have reported that it grows the most during the coldest months of the year. Burbot are hungry before and after spawning, in the heart of winter. It has poor eyesight but an excellent sense of smell and hearing.

In Kuusamo, we’ve designed a special jig for burbot, equipped with two hooks for bait that rattle underwater when loose. The best baits are pieces of smelt, vendace, or herring, though other fish can also be used.

How to fish with the burbot jig: lower it to the bottom. Make quick vibrations with the rod to make the jig rattle and stir up bottom silt. Vibrate the rod for about five seconds, then let the jig rest still. Change holes if you don’t see signs of fish within a few minutes. The rattling and silt cloud attract burbot to investigate the jig. When you notice the fish nibbling at the bait, make a quick strike and lift it onto the ice.

For burbot jigging, you need a stiff ice rod with a thick line. Many anglers also fish without a rod, keeping the line between their fingers.
