The history of the Räsänen goes back to the northern salmon rivers. A salmon angler once cut a piece from the rim of a copper coffee pot and hammered it into a spoon lure in the wilderness. Soon enough, he was by the riverbank battling salmon. Salmonids were caught with the seven-centimeter spoon throughout the northern waters of the Oulu, Kemi, and Tornio Rivers. The story goes that in the early 1900s, Jouni F. Helander from Utsjoki finally brought it to Rovaniemi to be manufactured by a watchmaker. The shape and scale pattern of the Räsänen were born over a hundred years ago — the same shape found in every Räsänen made today.

When it was first dipped into the clear salmon waters of the Teno, a legend was born. On that very first evening, it produced such a salmon catch that other fishermen in the village eagerly wanted one of their own. Larger and smaller versions of the spoon were crafted and spread with anglers across Finland. Before long, the Räsänen was being used successfully to fish pike, perch, and zander. Today in Kuusamo, we still hold on to those same Räsänen shapes.
