Alongside fish, a wide variety of aquatic insects of different shapes and sizes live there. The smallest are so tiny you can hardly see them with the naked eye. Yet, almost all of them are food for fish. Especially in midwinter, perch – the number one catch for ice anglers – is cold, sluggish, and passive in its feeding. It will happily eat whatever it finds nearby. It doesn’t even get hungry that often, as the cold water lowers its energy needs. When hunger does strike, aquatic insects are its main food source. Kuusamo’s Kirppu jigs imitate exactly those little critters that perch start to look for when hunger hits. Use the Kirppu with a thin line on its own or attach it below a jigging lure. Some active ice anglers developed the so-called \u003cem\u003etapsi rig\u003c\/em\u003e. You can make one like this: tie a short 15 cm piece of line with a vertical jig at one end and a Kirppu at the other.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHow do you fish with a Kirppu? The key is to keep it moving. The movement must not be constant; the Kirppu needs to pause briefly between twitches. It’s usually during this pause that the fish sucks the hook into its mouth. Start fishing with gentle vibrations near the bottom. If nothing happens, lift the Kirppu up about half a meter and continue twitching.
